The Chronicle of Pendleton series. In the kingdom of Pendleton, King Hallory has denounced his wife, Katalina, as a traitor. He has imprisoned her and their eldest daughter, Meri. His other daughters are mysteriously missing. Hallory has elevated the sister of his long time concubine as his queen. The citizens of Pendleton may be forbidden from mentioning their former queen and princesses, but they secretly collect prayer cards with their images on them and make offerrings (in secret) to the gods for their health.
