Getting the details ready.

This abstract landscape of New Mexico is an expressive rendering of one of my favorite places. The colors are how it makes me feel, rather than an exact duplicate of what I was seeing. The second photo is a process photo that shows some of the materials and tools used in this painting. It is oil, using R and F oil sticks, over a collaged background of kozo paper. The kozo is mounted on Arches oil paper. Oil over collage gives texture and an interesting surface. The varnish is beeswax, which gives a velvety, matt surface. My landscapes are inspired both by the American West, and by one of my favorite landscape artists, JMW Turner. His landscapes were mostly seascapes, but I always feel his work deeply when looking at it.
