American Beauty- Inspired by Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land"

Inspired by Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land”, this original one of a kind ACEO features a vibrant sunset over a mountain stream that is surrounded by vibrant green trees, all depicted in a stained glass style motif This ACEO is the third in my “Wet, Hot, American Sarcasm” collection which features a total of 6 cards inspired by songs people tend to think are patriotic, but aren’t. However, “This Land is Your Land” is probably the song on the list that comes closest, because it is a sincere song about the beauty of America. It just also happens to be a bold reminder that that beauty is meant to belong to the American people as a whole and not just the rich and/or powerful, hence the often debated verse scorning private property. Guthrie was very left leaning and did not bother to hide it, which lead to a lot of pushback, but there is a sort of cosmic justice in the fact that this song that was snubbed, scorned, and shunned became one of the best known and most beloved songs in American history. This song reminds us firstly that we the people (meaning ALL the people) belong to this land and secondly that we bear the dutiesthat come with that belonging, including respecting and protecting our natural resources and caring for our neighbors whomever they may be. I chose the landscape scene for this card because nature serves as a constant reminder that the beauty of America is more than a gift, it is also a promise, and it is up to us to fulfill that promise.
